In March 2007, Toronto will host an international event of unprecedented magnitude and scope for music educators of all disciplines.

For the first time ever, the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers' Associations (CFMTA), the U.S. Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), and The Royal Conservatory of Music will unite for a groundbreaking international pedagogical conference.

To celebrate this collaboration of Canadian and American colleagues in music education, and of particular interest to music festivals across Canada, one Canadian and one American pianist at the amateur level will be selected, each to perform a concerto at the opening night concert with The Royal Conservatory of Music Orchestra.

As well, courtesy of YAMAHA CANADA, the winner will be flown to New York City, all expenses paid, to give a public recital and enjoy a masterclass with a top musician.

These once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for a young Canadian pianist coming through the Canadian festival system have been made possible by CFMTA, RCM, YAMAHA CANADA and the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals (FCMF), in cooperation with local and provincial music festivals across Canada.

The Canadian candidate...

  • will have successfully competed at his/her local and provincial music festival competitions, and will have been recommended to compete at the National Music Festival, according to the rules and regulations set out by the respective festivals.
  • will have been deemed by the adjudicators to have given the best performance of a concerto in the Piano class at the 2006 National Music Festival competition in Thunder Bay, Ontario, organized by the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals (FCMF).

This is a unique opportunity for a young Canadian pianist to perform his/her  concerto with the renowned RCM Orchestra before an international audience, and to share the evening with a counterpart from the United States.  And now, thanks to YAMAHA CANADA, there is the added bonus of a recital and masterclass opportunity in New York City.

The Federation of Canadian Music Festivals (FCMF), representing local and music festivals across the country, is delighted to be a part of this great event, and through our Festival system, to provide the opportunity for a young and as yet unnamed musician in Canada to take full advantage of it.

The music festival movement in Canada is unlike any other--competitions are held across the country, and are open to students of all ages and expertise, beginning at the local level and continuing through provincial competitions to the National stage.  The competitions are fair, demanding, and always exciting!  For competitors from each province who advance to compete at the National Music Festival competitions in Thunder Bay in August, 2006, it will be an amazing experience.  And now, the extra rewards for the competitor chosen to have given the best piano concerto performance--it is the icing on the cake!

Thank you to CFMTA and RCM for allowing the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals (FCMF), on behalf of local and provincial festivals across the country, to partner in this great undertaking.  And "thank you" to YAMAHA CANADA for now adding the extra prize of a recital and masterclass opportunity in New York City.

We appreciate the help of anyone reading this e-letter in promoting this event, and look forward to the Thunder Bay National Music Festival in 2006!
